Saoirse Ronan has expressed her desire to take on a dark villain role in an upcoming James Bond movie.
Known for her compelling performances in award-winning dramas such as Little Women, Brooklyn, and Lady Bird, the Oscar nominee recently told Empire magazine that she would eagerly accept the opportunity to portray a antagonist in the iconic 007 series. The franchise is currently in the casting process for its 26th installment.
“I want to go dark,” she stated emphatically. “I’m dead serious about wanting to be a Bond villain. I think it would be particularly interesting to see a young female villain, especially for girls and women, to witness someone channeling pent-up anger in a dramatic way. There’s something compelling about that, and I would love to explore it further.”
The Bond series has featured numerous female villains over the years, but they typically serve as henchmen to the primary male antagonist. The last actress to play a main female villain was Sophie Marceau as Elektra King in 1999’s The World Is Not Enough.
Casting for the new James Bond film was officially announced in May, with the search for an actor to replace Daniel Craig following his departure in 2021’s No Time To Die. Director Denis Villeneuve will lead the project, and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is writing the script. Producer Amy Pascal has predicted that the next 007 will be revealed by the end of the year.
Recently, Jacob Elordi, who has been considered a top contender for the role, avoided questions about auditioning for James Bond while attending the Leicester Square premiere of his new film The Dog Stars.
