INDIANAPOLIS — While there has been lingering confusion regarding the exact age of Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner, the defender is certain of his own timeline.

While engaging in a recent discussion with media members regarding his role as a veteran leader on defense, Gardner took the opportunity to remind everyone of his actual age.

“I’m 24, by the way,” Gardner remarked.

The clarification may come as a surprise to many, as several online platforms and databases currently list Gardner as being 25 years old.

A widespread misconception has suggested that Gardner was born on Aug. 31, 2000. This error appears across various digital profiles, including ESPN.com, Pro Football Focus, and Yahoo Sports.

However, Gardner was actually born on Aug. 31, 2001, making him 24. Both the official Colts website and NFL.com correctly list his birth year as 2001.

“It’s crazy that I’m saying this once again,” Gardner noted last week during the Colts’ final offseason practice.

In a conversation with The Athletic, Gardner explained that he has always maintained his birth year is 2001, noting that his driver’s license reflects this date.

“When it comes to the paperwork and everything I’ve signed, it all says ’01,” he told The Athletic. “So, I don’t know where or how it got messed up unless people just get it straight from Google.”

A spokesperson for the Colts confirmed that the organization has had his correct birth date on file since he was acquired in a major trade last year. Indianapolis traded two first-round selections and receiver Adonai Mitchell to the New York Jets to secure Gardner, who is poised to be a cornerstone of the Colts’ defense this upcoming season.

Although Gardner is entering his fifth professional season, he remains younger than several players entering the league. For instance, Los Angeles Chargers rookie Akheem Mesidor turned 25 in April and has yet to participate in an NFL game.
