Saudi Arabia Ready to Host Record AFC Asian Cup, Official Declares

Saudi Arabia is prepared to host the upcoming AFC Asian Cup, the largest edition in the tournament’s history, Mohammed Al-Ghamdi, media director for the local organizing committee, stated during a conference in Japan last week.

The 19th edition of the continental championship is scheduled to run from January 7 to February 5 across Riyadh, Jeddah, and Alkhobar.

Al-Ghamdi delivered his remarks in Tokyo at the Asian Football Confederation Member Associations and Regional Associations Presidents’ and General Secretaries’ Conference 2026.

Speaking during a session titled “Ahlan Asia, Saudi Arabia Awaits,” Al-Ghamdi said: “First, I would like to thank the AFC, the AFC member council, and the chief member council present today. As the local organizing committee, we have hosted four tournaments encompassing 86 matches and 51 teams and clubs. Just weeks ago, we welcomed 62,000 spectators to the finals of the Khaleeji Cup, also known as the 2026 Arabian Gulf Cup.

“People want to be here, and that is the passion we aim to deliver to Asia,” he added. “The tournament will feature 24 teams, 51 matches, 80 stadiums, and three host cities.

“When visitors arrive in Saudi Arabia, they will encounter diverse cultures, explore unique tourism opportunities, and gain greater insight into the Kingdom.”

Al-Ghamdi noted that preparations are ongoing and that the Kingdom will be fully ready for the opening kickoff on January 7.

“Competition venues are currently 80 percent complete,” he said. “We have 27 training sites, 31 hotels, and 15 operational work streams operating around the clock to ensure we deliver everything required for an exceptional tournament.”

He also introduced the Ahlan app, designed for fans and media personnel attending the event.

“Ahlan consolidates all essential services in one place, ensuring that journey planning becomes the simplest part of the experience. Interest continues to grow,” Al-Ghamdi said. “To date, more than 150 tickets have been sold. For our media colleagues, these experiences will provide countless stories to share about the tournament. Ahlan will offer a seamless process for registration and accreditation, delivering the best and smoothest experience possible. Ahlan Asia, and thank you.”
