- Saudi minister urges action on root causes of regional conflicts, condemns Houthi escalation, and reaffirms backing for Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
RIYADH: Saudi Vice Foreign Minister Waleed Elkhereiji addressed the 22nd IISS Manama Dialogue in Bahrain on Saturday, speaking during a session titled “The Implications of a Transformative Regional Conflict.”
Elkhereiji called for containing crises and reinforcing security and stability across a region grappling with widening conflicts, deepening humanitarian hardship, and mounting risks to maritime security, energy supplies, and the global economy. He stressed that protecting states and their populations requires political settlements that address the underlying drivers of conflict and prevent their resurgence, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The minister affirmed that Riyadh operates on the principle that its own security is closely bound to regional stability, and that sustainable development and prosperity are unattainable without lasting peace.
Elkhereiji said Saudi Arabia pairs the enhancement of its defense capabilities and sovereignty—within the framework of international law—with vigorous diplomacy aimed at resolving crises. This approach, he said, is guided by respect for state sovereignty, good neighborliness, and non-interference in internal affairs.
“The Kingdom continues its diplomatic efforts, in coordination with its brothers and partners, to de-escalate tensions and resolve disputes through peaceful means, safeguarding regional security and stability,” Elkhereiji said.
He reiterated Saudi support for Yemen’s legitimate government and backed efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement that preserves Yemen’s unity and security. He condemned continued Houthi militia escalation against Yemen and its people, as well as against the Kingdom, citing attacks on civilian facilities and threats to maritime navigation. Elkhereiji also denounced attempts to undermine de-escalation initiatives, expand the conflict, and derail efforts to restore security and stability across the region.
Noting the challenges confronting the region, Elkhereiji underlined the need to strengthen national resilience to crises. He said the Kingdom is advancing its defense capabilities, protecting critical infrastructure and vital facilities, enhancing cybersecurity, and ensuring the continuity of essential services, all while deepening Gulf coordination and broadening defense partnerships.
Elkhereiji concluded that, under its leadership’s direction, Saudi Arabia is cooperating with partners to build regional security founded on stable states and just political settlements, enabling the region’s peoples to enjoy security, development, and prosperity.
On the sidelines of the forum, Elkhereiji met with Luigi Di Maio, the European Union’s Special Representative for the Gulf Region. The two discussed recent regional and international developments, mechanisms for addressing them, and shared priorities.
Elkhereiji also held talks with Mohammed Al-Khulaifi, Qatar’s Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They reviewed the strong bilateral relationship between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, explored ways to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest.
