New details have emerged in the case of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, who has been missing since February 1. According to NBC News, a second ransom note was sent on June 22, allegedly claiming that Nancy had died shortly after being taken from her Arizona home.
The note, which sources say indicated that Nancy Guthrie had died, did not include any financial demands for the return of her remains. While it did not contain an apology for the kidnapping, it reportedly expressed guilt over her alleged death.
Reports indicate that the family has spent months searching for answers while privately coping with what they fear may be the worst-case scenario. Sources say the recent public disclosure of the note’s contents has re-traumatized Savannah Guthrie and her siblings, forcing them to relive their grief through the spotlight.
“Sharing these details doesn’t help find Nancy or solve the case—it only forces the family to relive their nightmare,” one source told reporters. “The focus should be on finding answers, not exposing a grieving family’s most painful moments.”
This development comes one day after Savannah Guthrie made an emotional appeal during the June 23 broadcast of Today, telling viewers that she and her family are “in agony” and “cannot be at peace.” She emphasized the $1 million reward offered for information leading to Nancy’s location and pleaded with anyone with knowledge to come forward.
“We’re begging for your help,” Guthrie said. “Please, if you’re watching, no matter how small, the reward is there. You can tell us. It can be anonymous. Please do the right thing for us, for our family, for our children.”
Authorities urge those with tips or leads to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Office at 520-351-4900.
