Nine groups remain in play, and Scotland must finish ahead of at least four other teams to advance.
In practice, this means a minimum of four specific scenarios need to occur:
Thursday
Group E: Both Ecuador (vs Germany) and Curaçao (vs Ivory Coast) must fail to win, or Curaçao must win by at least four goals while Ecuador does not win.
Group F: Sweden must lose to Japan by four or more goals.
Group D: Paraguay and Australia are level on three points and face each other; a draw would see both through. Scotland needs Paraguay to lose by two or more goals, or Australia to be beaten by at least four goals.
Friday
Group F: Senegal and Iraq must draw, or Iraq must beat Senegal by no more than two goals.
Group H: Uruguay must lose to Spain.
Group G: Iran must lose to Egypt.
Saturday
Group L: Croatia must lose to Ghana by at least three goals.
Group K: DR Congo vs Uzbekistan must end in a draw, or Uzbekistan must win by no more than three goals.
Group J: Austria and Algeria are level on three points; a draw would see both advance. Scotland needs Algeria to lose by at least two goals, or Austria to be beaten by four or more goals.
