Following Dan Wilson’s departure, the Seattle Mariners are conducting an extensive search, looking outside the organization for their next manager. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the team is considering a diverse array of candidates with substantial managerial experience. Ownership aims to bring stability to the dugout, prioritizing prior major league coaching expertise in their selection process. This approach marks a shift from their recent hiring practices, as the Mariners haven’t brought in a manager with significant MLB experience since Lloyd McClendon’s 2013 tenure.
The team has identified several potential candidates, including:

Joe Espada, whose contract expires after the Astros’ recent Wild Card loss to the Chicago White Sox, is a leading candidate. The Mariners have already engaged Espada, who previously won the 2022 World Series as the Astros’ bench coach under Dusty Baker. During his three-year tenure as manager, Espada achieved a 256–229 record and secured two AL West division titles, making him a strong contender if Seattle can attract him from an in-division rival.
The Mariners’ pursuit of Espada aligns with their strategy to secure a manager with proven success at the highest level. Such a move would parallel the 2023 acquisition of Craig Counsell by the Cubs from the Brewers, demonstrating their willingness to target established talent from within the league.

Former Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, who was dismissed after the 2025 season, is another strong candidate. The 44-year-old spent the current season in the Dodgers’ front office and brings a track record of success, including an AL Manager of the Year award as a rookie skipper in 2019. Baldelli compiled a 527–505 record over seven seasons with Minnesota, guiding the team to three AL Central division titles and demonstrating resilience as a leader of young talent.

Brandon Hyde, who recently resigned from the Orioles after guiding them to three consecutive winning seasons, is also under consideration. His 2023 AL Manager of the Year campaign marked a career highlight, as he transformed a rebuilding team into a playoff contender. Hyde’s ability to develop prospects like Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, and Jordan Westburg further underscores his qualifications for the Mariners’ vacant role.

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN – SEPTEMBER 30: Manager David Ross #3 of the Chicago Cubs walks to home plate to make a change during the game against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on September 30, 2023 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Photo by John Fisher/Getty Images)
David Ross, a two-time World Series champion (2013 with the Red Sox and 2016 with the Cubs), is also a potential candidate. After retiring as a player, Ross managed the Cubs from 2020 to 2023, compiling a 262-284 record but failing to lead the team to the playoffs. His experience spans multiple organizations and includes a championship pedigree, making him a compelling option if Seattle seeks a manager with dual-world-series success.
The Mariners’ search reflects a renewed focus on securing a manager capable of immediate impact. By targeting candidates with proven track records, they aim to stabilize the franchise and build momentum heading into the future.
