Sebastian Berhalter’s stint as one of MLS’s top midfielders has concluded, with the Vancouver Whitecaps confirming his transfer to English Championship side Middlesbrough, as first reported by The Athletic’s Tom Bogert.

Although a few details remain to be finalized, the Whitecaps are poised to receive a $2 million transfer fee for Berhalter, who was slated to become a free agent at year’s end.

A source told Postmedia on Wednesday that negotiations had intensified, though the club involved was not disclosed.

At first glance, a move to Middlesbrough may appear surprising for a player of Berhalter’s caliber, but the presence of fellow American Aidan Morris—his longtime friend from the Columbus Crew academy—makes the transfer more understandable.

Berhalter’s development traces back to his 2022 acquisition by the Whitecaps after being released by Austin FC. Though the son of a former U.S. international showed flashes of promise in both Austin and Columbus, he was often viewed primarily as a high‑energy workhorse.

While Berhalter struggled to secure a regular role with Columbus and Austin, Morris emerged as a first‑team staple for the Crew. He started in the 2020 MLS Cup final, a 3‑0 Columbus victory, became a central figure in their 2023 title‑winning side, and transferred to Middlesbrough in 2024. Last season, Boro finished fifth in the Championship and fell short in the promotion playoffs, missing a Premier League return.

Securing Berhalter represents a significant step toward pushing the 150‑year‑old club back into the Premier League.

In Vancouver, Berhalter evolved into an all‑action midfielder, contributing goals and assists while excelling on set pieces. His ferocious attitude earned praise from teammates and coaches, and he stood out as a leader among a squad already rich in talent.

Virtually every analytical outlet ranked him as the league’s top midfielder.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, he also earned a role with the United States men’s national team.
