SECRETARY RUBIO: Thank you all for attending. Your team, led by Mora, did an excellent job organizing this event. It’s exciting to be involved in a commemorative initiative that honors the 250th anniversary of the United States’ founding, a milestone worthy of lasting recognition.
The passport is more than a travel document; it symbolizes national pride and serves as a vital lifeline for Americans abroad. When one loses their passport, it not only restricts travel but also threatens their ability to return home. We believe the new design reflects this importance, and the State Department’s partnership with the government-wide design studio is creating a passport that will be both meaningful and enduring.
The commemorative passport will be packaged in a distinctive box to signify its value, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity akin to those for luxury goods. Inside, the redesigned passport features a moving image on its pages and future QR codes linking to historical content, ensuring that each document remains a source of national pride. These innovations aim to modernize and elevate the passport experience for future generations.
Looking ahead, the State Department is also advancing technological improvements to streamline the application process. By leveraging device cameras and online verification, applicants can submit photos and documents digitally, reducing the need for in-person visits and accelerating processing times. These changes, set to launch in the coming months, will make the passport program more customer-focused while prioritizing security and efficiency.
Secretary Rubio emphasized the importance of these updates, noting that the commemorative passport represents not only a historical tribute but also a foundation for a more advanced and accessible passport system. The State Department remains committed to ensuring that every American receives a document worthy of their service and heritage.
