Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has raised concerns over the travel restrictions faced by fans in the United States, following a travel ban issued by former President Donald Trump in December that affected visitors from Senegal and other World Cup nations.
The proclamation, which suspended entry for both immigrants and non‑immigrants—including those traveling for business or tourism—was applied to nationals from Senegal, Ivory Coast, Iran, and Haiti. While the executive order made exceptions for athletes, support staff, and immediate family members of the participating players, it did not extend the same relief to supporters.
After Senegal’s 3‑1 defeat by France, Koulibaly spoke with The Athletic‘s David Ornstein about the situation.
“The federation did the work to bring parents or close family with us. But it’s true some supporters couldn’t fly to America.”
“I believe every team should have the opportunity to bring their people, and I don’t understand why fans from Africa face these obstacles. I want to focus on football, enjoy the sport, and I believe football is for everyone.”
“I hope the situation improves, but for me the most important thing is to play for our people.”
