Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, aged 34, has announced his retirement from international duty, ending an eight‑year career that yielded 59 appearances for the Lions of Teranga.
In Wolof, the country’s principal language, Mendy wrote, “Jerejef (Thank you) Senegal,” accompanying the post with a video montage highlighting his most memorable moments wearing the national shirt.
Born in France, Mendy has played top‑level club football for Marseille, Reims, Rennes, Chelsea and currently with Al‑Ahli in Saudi Arabia. He earned his first international cap under coach Aliou Cissé in 2018.
He was part of the Senegal squad that captured the Africa Nations Cup in 2021, triumphing on penalties over Egypt. He also featured in the following year’s tournament, where Senegal secured a 1‑0 victory on the pitch before the title was later reassigned to hosts Morocco by CAF.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport is set to hear Senegal’s appeal on 8 October.
Alongside captain Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gana Gueye and superstar Sadio Mané, Mendy represented Senegal’s golden generation.
He debuted at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and remained a key figure for Senegal at the 2026 tournament in the United States, where the team was eliminated in the round of 16 by Belgium (3‑2).
The Senegalese national team, currently managed by Patrick Vieira, honoured Mendy on their social‑media channels.
“There are careers measured in caps, trophies and statistics,” the team posted. “And then there are those measured by the place they hold in the memory of a people. Edouard Mendy, your story with the Lions now belongs to that category.”
