Senior Police Official Survives Gunfire in Johannesburg

One of South Africa’s most senior police officers has survived a shooting incident in Johannesburg, according to police.

Deputy crime intelligence boss Major General Feroz Khan was shot Sunday evening while driving home from a football match and was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery, local media reported.

The attack took place just days before Khan was scheduled to appear before a public inquiry examining criminality within South Africa’s police force.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said in a statement released on Monday that an investigation was underway.

“It is premature and irresponsible to speculate on any possible motive or to conclude that the incident is linked to his anticipated appearance before the [inquiry],” she added.

The inquiry, known as the Madlanga commission, was established after senior police officer Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged last July that organised crime groups had infiltrated the government.
