British hard-right leader Nigel Farage sought to downplay a fresh donations scandal on Friday after an undercover sting operation overshadowed his Reform UK party’s annual conference.

Farage aimed to use the gathering to move past damaging controversies over financial contributions by outlining policies for a potential Reform government, including cooperation with France’s far-right National Rally (RN) party.

However, hours before Farage’s keynote address, two senior Reform officials resigned following an investigation by Channel 4 News.

The investigation revealed two senior party figures arranging for a US company to pay more than £30,000 for three opinion polls commissioned by the party.

The report also included undercover footage showing discussions to secure a £500,000 foreign donation—prohibited under UK electoral law.

Posring as wealthy donors with British connections, the undercover team from investigative group Verbatim reportedly spent a year interacting with Reform officials, culminating in a meeting with Farage.

Channel 4 stated Verbatim was an independent organization founded by journalists from the Centre for Climate Reporting, adding it had verified the footage, which included covertly filmed meetings.

Reform announced that policy head James Orr and Farage’s longtime aide Dan Jukes resigned from their positions pending an internal investigation into the sting operation. The Labour party, alongside other opposition parties, reportedly informed police about claims Reform accepted funding from a US firm for opinion polls and proposed securing a larger overseas donation through a UK intermediary.

Farage, 62, is already under parliamentary investigation for a £5 million donation from crypto-billionaire Christopher Harborne in 2024, which he denies was improperly sourced.

Dismissal of Allegations

Farage characterized allegations of prior foreign donations as “loose pub talk” but acknowledged Orr and Jukes’ comments in the footage were “injudicious at best”.

In his keynote address to a packed Birmingham conference hall, Farage condemned the undercover filming as a “prolonged exercise in entrapment”, asserting the party had taken no illegal funds.

Conference attendees largely dismissed the allegations. Nurse Heather Kynman remarked, “They’re so worried about Reform, it’s attack, attack, attack all the time.” Delegate Darren Ball asserted, “Reform is the only party that can save this country. Immigration is a huge issue for the UK.”

Immigration Policy Emphasis

The party focused on anti-immigration policies, including ending irregular migrant arrivals via small boats on England’s southern coast. Home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf pledged a Reform government would “deploy the Royal Navy to stop the boats” and “remove every foreign national who entered this country illegally”.

Jordan Bardella, president of France’s National Rally, spoke at the conference.

Bardella pledged France would no longer serve as a “gateway for illegal immigration into the UK” under a National Rally government and announced a mutual agreement with Reform to collaborate on immigration if both parties gain power. The Labour government cited reduced Channel crossing numbers this summer as evidence of existing France-UK cooperation.

Conference Developments

Farage seeks to recapture momentum from Reform’s successful May local election performance. Despite tight security, his speech was repeatedly interrupted by protesters who were removed by security.

During deputy leader Richard Tice’s speech, a climate activist banner depicted Farage in a top hat reading “Collect £5 million, burn the planet.” Tice faces allegations of failing to declare financial contributions. Deputy leader Tice also lacks declared financial disclosures, according to reports.
