The accident occurred in the Seodaemun district during a safety inspection after workers identified a 2 centimetre subsidence and halted construction. Fire officials reported that debris and concrete slabs collapsed, crushing several workers beneath. Twisted steel beams and damaged vehicles were visible at the site, while police cordoned off the surrounding roads.

Seoul Metropolitan Government officials said the inspection began at 14:00 local time, just moments before the failure. Built in 1966, the overpass had been undergoing demolition since August 2025 due to concerns over its ageing structure.
Some debris fell onto a nearby railway line, prompting the Korea Railroad Corp. to suspend part of its service to Seoul Station. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse as rescue teams work to secure the unstable site and assess the remaining structure.
