Serena Williams was unable to recover from a knee problem in time to compete in the Wimbledon doubles event.

Serena, aged 44, and her sister Venus, 46, received a wild‑card entry into the women’s doubles draw and were scheduled to meet their first‑round opponents on Saturday evening.

However, the 23‑time Grand Slam singles champion sustained a knee injury during her singles comeback match versus Maya Joint on Tuesday.

Serena marked her return to singles competition after an almost four‑year hiatus.

She expressed her disappointment on Instagram, writing, “I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from the doubles.”

She added, “Returning to the court has been a privilege, and the chance to play alongside Venus once again meant everything to me.”

“I did everything possible to prepare, but my knee simply isn’t ready for competition.”

“I am deeply thankful to tournament director Jamie Baker and the entire Wimbledon staff for providing every opportunity to compete here. Thanks also to the fans for their remarkable support, which made this comeback meaningful…All I can say is stay tuned for what’s next in a city near you.”

“The image of the syringes shows the fluid that was drained from my knee after my singles match—yikes! The silver lining is that my knee should not swell or accumulate that much fluid again. The downside is that, despite my best efforts, I was unable to get it fit for doubles.”
