Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, stated on Monday that he condemned the reckless criminal behaviour in the strongest possible terms.
He also stressed that anyone who deliberately drives a vehicle the wrong way down a motorway is engaging in lethal, dangerous behaviour, and this must stop,” O’Callaghan said.
He said he spoke with Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly on Monday and told him that the Gardaí would have whatever resources the government provides to respond to this threat to public safety.
The Garda Representative Association (GRA) urged that tougher legislation is needed to address dangerous driving.
GRA’s James Morrisoe said that people are gambling with their own lives and the lives of innocent road users by engaging in dangerous driving, likening it to Russian roulette.
Martin noted that this was the second appalling crash in as many days, caused by reckless driving on the wrong side of the motorway, which endangered innocent road users.
He described the act as irresponsible and dangerous, expressing shock that some individuals are committing it for social media likes.
O’Callaghan emphasized that social media companies bear significant responsibility in this matter.
“They state in their codes of practice that they will not permit any content glorifying criminal behaviour.”
“Regrettably, this has not been occurring, and social media companies must step up to fulfill their responsibilities.”
Irish broadcaster RTE is reporting, external that the family is from the Carlow area.
The report adds that several of the boys who died had strong ties to Carlow town and to Athy in County Kildare.
