Recent wildfires in Spain and France have forced evacuations and blanketed parts of Europe in hazardous smoke as they spread toward urban areas under relentless summer heat.
Tens of thousands have fled their homes as numerous blazes swept through both nations, with French officials dubbing two fires as “the ogres of summer” and Spanish authorities labeling one Madrid-area fire “the worst in the region’s history.”
The Spanish government has declared the Madrid region blaze a national emergency, prompting both countries to seek European Union assistance for firefighting efforts and support for displaced residents.
