Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, where he praised the Pakistan Mission’s efforts in promoting diplomatic dialogue and resolving conflicts peacefully.
The Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN shared a statement on X, confirming that Afridi was invited by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, the nation’s permanent representative. During the visit, Ambassador Ahmad outlined Pakistan’s active participation in advancing multilateralism, diplomatic engagement, and global peace and security.
Afridi acknowledged the mission’s contributions to fostering international cooperation and advocating peaceful dispute resolution. He was also briefed on the UN’s work in promoting sustainable development and global stability during a guided tour of the facility.
Ambassador Ahmad commended Afridi’s distinguished cricket career and his humanitarian projects, which have significantly benefited underserved communities. The ambassador emphasized sports as a tool for cross-border unity, stating, “Sports transcend boundaries, build mutual understanding, and strengthen international goodwill.”
The mission highlighted the visit as a testament to the synergy between sports and diplomacy in fostering global harmony. In a social media post, Afridi thanked the delegation for their hospitality and expressed pride in Pakistan’s representation on the world stage.
Afridi, known for his explosive batting and all-round abilities, played 398 One-Day Internationals, 99 T20s, and 27 Test matches before retiring in 2017. He now leads the Shahid Afridi Foundation, focusing on social welfare initiatives.
