Shearer Critiques England’s Lackluster Performance as Rashford and Saka Struggle in Midfield Battle]
Alan Shearer delivered a scathing assessment of England’s first-half showing against Panama in their final Group L fixture of World Cup 2026.
Speaking during the interval with the match locked at a frustrating 0-0, the former Three Lions captain offered little positive commentary on his nation’s lethargic display in New Jersey.
Shearer Questions Wingers’ Impact Despite Touch Count
The veteran pundit reserved his sharpest criticism for Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, who started up front for England’s rotated lineup. Despite generating considerable possession, Shearer argued the duo failed to meaningfully influence the tempo or create genuine chances.
Thomas Tuchel opted to rest key players for the dead-rubber fixture, yet even upon review, the intended rotation failed to spark any productive momentum.
“I haven’t seen the stats, but I can see with my own eyes that Rashford and Saka have been involved in a lot of what England have done, yet they haven’t done enough with it,” Shearer told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“It’s been really disappointing – especially after we moved the ball with real purpose early on. That intensity didn’t carry through.”
England Secure Knockout Stage Passage
Despite significant criticism on social media and across broadcast platforms, England have already secured their place in the Round of 32 thanks to earlier results.
However, the hunt for top spot in Group L remains very much alive. Panama are already eliminated, so a draw or unexpected defeat here could expose England to a potentially tougher path in the knockout rounds.
A commanding victory is now essential to avoid being drawn into an unfavorable bracket. England will need to reinvent their approach dramatically if they hope to restore pride ahead of what lies ahead.
