David Zini, head of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), convened his first meeting with Opposition Leader Yair Lapid since assuming the role on Sunday.
The discussion occurred against a backdrop of numerous allegations suggesting Zini has shown excessive loyalty to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and might attempt to sway upcoming elections in the premier’s favor.
Zini assumed office in October 2025, already facing controversy over his close relationship with Netanyahu and his lack of prior intelligence experience, having spent his entire career in the Israel Defense Forces and attained the rank of major general.
Per Zini’s account, the two reviewed Shin Bet operations, and Lapid was briefed on threats across various fronts.
It remains unclear whether Zini arranged and publicized the meeting to counter criticism regarding his ties to Netanyahu and demonstrate bipartisan outreach, or if it had been planned earlier.
This is a developing story.
