In Lucknow on June 17, India captain Shubman Gill delivered a stunning 154 runs from 110 balls against Afghanistan in sweltering conditions, marking more than a routine century and positioning himself among the nation’s cricket legends.
Displaying elegant strokeplay, Gill dismantled the Afghanistan bowling attack at Ekana Stadium, effortlessly clearing the boundary and maintaining total dominance from start to finish. His 154 runs represent his second 150-plus innings in ODIs.
This feat has elevated him to one of the most exclusive batting groups in Indian cricket.
Prior to Wednesday’s innings, Gill’s sole 150-plus ODI score was a double century of 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023. His recent 154 against Afghanistan made him the fifth Indian to achieve multiple 150-plus scores in ODIs.
Rohit Sharma leads the list, holding the record with eight 150-plus innings, highlighted by his world‑record 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in 2014.
Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Virender Sehwag are the only other Indian batters to have recorded multiple 150‑plus scores.
Indians with Multiple 150+ Scores in ODIs
The record holders are Rohit Sharma with eight centuries (highest 264), Sachin Tendulkar with five (highest 200*), Virat Kohli with five (highest 183), Virender Sehwag with two (highest 219), and Shubman Gill with two (highest 208).
The rapidity with which Gill has reached this elite company is especially remarkable.
At merely 26, Gill has already amassed nine ODI centuries and surpassed 3,000 runs faster than any Indian batter, further cementing his reputation as one of the premier 50‑over specialists worldwide.
His 154 constituted a complete ODI innings: he absorbed the early pressure, accelerated through the middle overs, and then dominated the death overs, while his century partnership with Ishan Kishan underpinned one of India’s most commanding ODI batting performances in recent times.
The innings underscored a pattern that defines Gill’s ODI career: once set, he rarely settles for modest totals. Three of his nine centuries have already exceeded 140 runs, and his propensity to convert promising starts into match‑defining knocks distinguishes him from many peers.
India has produced many great ODI batters, from Tendulkar and Sehwag to Rohit and Kohli. By joining a club comprised solely of these legends, Gill adds another chapter to a rapidly blossoming one‑day career.
Rohit Sharma’s eight 150‑plus scores currently lead the field, but with his youth and the accelerating pace of record‑breaking, Gill has already positioned himself among the elite names in India’s illustrious ODI history.
