Since her 2022 debut album Nymph was shortlisted for the 2023 Mercury Prize, Shygirl has maintained a rapid pace. The British artist toured with Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, appeared on the Brat remix album, released several EPs, starred in Charli’s The Moment and Madonna’s Confessions II – The Film, and most recently introduced a new chapter with “Alyse.” She has now announced her second album, Swallow!
The lead single, “Lucky (hymn),” is out today. “This album unravelled at a time in my life where I felt truly loved and content,” Shygirl wrote on Instagram. “I felt grateful for all the ways it took to get to that place and I can’t wait to share the music that continues to bring me back to that feeling time and time again. It’s raw and spiky and lush and lovely. It’s my reminder to myself that it’s fine to be contrary and that bliss in oblivion is sometimes the most harmonious of states. If there’s anything I stand for it’s the pursuit of love; to love and be loved and all the emotions in between. I’m so grateful for everyone who has supported me and made it possible for this record to exist. Especially [Karma Kid]! We started with Lucky so it’s only right to announce with this song, my hymn.”
“Lucky (hymn)” marks a departure from Shygirl’s club-oriented sound, trading a jittery beat for dreamy guitar while retaining glimmers of electronic production. Its accompanying video was directed by Shygirl and Austen Taylor Pease.
Swallow! is scheduled for release on 11/6 through Because Music.
