Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has presented a Rs3.56 trillion budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. With estimated receipts projected at approximately Rs3.41 trillion, the provincial government anticipates a deficit of roughly Rs242 billion.
The budget session faced initial delays following protests from Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) lawmakers. MPA Ali Khurshidi stated that the party was boycotting the proceedings, citing a lack of prior consultation with the opposition.
Key highlights of the proposed budget include the introduction of no new taxes, a 7% raise in salaries and pensions, a Rs400 billion development program, and a Rs13.2 billion social protection package. The administration also detailed long-term strategic initiatives designed to establish Sindh as a regional center for technology, finance, trade, and renewable energy.
Chief Minister Murad emphasized that the government’s primary objectives for the upcoming fiscal year are to maintain fiscal discipline, bolster public finances, and sustain development momentum through a challenging economic period.
Addressing the tragic Gul Plaza fire, the CM noted that the Sindh government has approved a significant relief package totaling Rs8.45 billion. This includes Rs10 million in compensation for the families of each victim lost in the incident.
Provincial Cabinet Grants Approval
The Sindh cabinet officially approved the proposed budget for fiscal year 2026-27 earlier today, according to reports from state broadcaster PTV.
Presiding over the session, CM Murad stated that the budget was designed to address the needs of all socio-economic classes, with a specific focus on poverty eradication efforts throughout the province, PTV reported.
The report further confirmed that the Sindh government has also established new minimum wage standards for workers within this budget framework.
According to the CM House, the provincial cabinet commended the “record” development projects implemented during the preceding fiscal year.
The cabinet also reaffirmed its dedication to public service under the leadership of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. Additionally, the budget includes a revised increase in the minimum wage for the provincial workforce.
In a preparatory meeting held a day prior to the budget presentation, CM Murad reviewed the performance of major revenue-generating departments. He issued directives to enhance collection mechanisms and improve fiscal efficiency to provide the necessary support for the province’s development goals.
