Sir Alex Ferguson has labeled Arsenal “boring,” criticizing Mikel Arteta’s tactical approach while offering his congratulations to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi following their Champions League victory.
The Gunners suffered a devastating defeat via a penalty shootout in Budapest after a grueling 1-1 draw over 120 minutes, narrowly missing out on their first-ever European title.
As Arsenal supporters processed the heartbreaking loss, the legendary former Manchester United manager was quick to voice his disapproval of the north London club’s strategic choices.
Ferguson Slams Arsenal’s Defensive Approach
According to a report from the French publication L’Equipe, the iconic Scottish manager contacted the PSG hierarchy immediately after the final whistle.
Ferguson reportedly messaged Al-Khelaïfi to criticize Arsenal’s ultra-defensive game plan, stating: “Nasser, this is Alex Ferguson. Well done, it was a tough night for you, but you played against a boring team that did nothing but defend. Enjoy your holidays, you deserve it.”
Despite taking an early lead in the sixth minute through Kai Havertz, Arsenal spent the vast majority of the remaining 114 minutes operating in a compact low block, recording less than 25% possession throughout the match.
For Ferguson, whose historic rivalry with Arsène Wenger was defined by a commitment to attacking football, Arteta’s decision to prioritize defensive stability over pursuing a second goal was clearly unacceptable.
Arteta’s Pragmatism Sparks Debate
While Arteta’s pragmatic style has drawn heavy criticism from pundits and neutral observers, his methodology has proven effective. This resilient defensive structure was the cornerstone of Arsenal’s recent Premier League triumph, ending a 22-year domestic title drought.
Under Arteta, the Gunners have evolved into one of the most difficult teams to break down in Europe, boasting the strongest defensive record in England.
Although the decision to “park the bus” in Budapest ultimately led to a shootout defeat, this tactical identity has undeniably restored Arsenal’s status as a trophy-winning powerhouse.
