Sir Patrick Stewart Remembered: Sir Ian McKellen Leads Global Tributes After Icon’s Passing at 86

Comedian Ricky Gervais, whose BBC series Extras featured Sir Patrick Stewart, described him as a legend.

Sharing blooper footage of the pair giggling on set, Gervais remarked, “I still can’t believe he agreed to do this scene. And he didn’t even mind when I ruined every take.”

Sir Patrick Stewart remained a lifelong supporter of English Football League club Huddersfield Town, which hailed him as a “titan of his craft.”

“Fiercely proud of his Yorkshire roots, Sir Patrick Stewart was a Terrier in every sense, and Huddersfield Town expressed pride in counting him as one of their own,” the club stated.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, while Lewy body dementia results from abnormal protein deposits that impair cognitive function.

Michelle Dyson, CEO of the Alzheimer’s Society, said Sir Patrick Stewart was an “extraordinarily talented and much-loved actor admired by millions worldwide,” adding, “His death is a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating impact dementia has on people and families across the globe.”

In later life, Sir Patrick Stewart became a prominent campaigner against domestic violence, serving as an ambassador for the charity Refuge in 2007 after witnessing his mother suffer abuse at his father’s hands.

Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, Refuge’s board chair, said it had been a privilege to “watch his endless devotion” to the cause, noting he “broke down barriers and taboos on the subject.”

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham described Sir Patrick Stewart as “one of the very best” who “never forgot his working-class Yorkshire roots.”

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said on behalf of the government: “He brought joy to millions. He always stood up for what he believed in, including through his campaigning to help those affected by domestic violence.”
