A vocalist who began her career busking as a teenager in Cardiff has been crowned winner of The Voice UK.
Cate McHugh, a resident of Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan, appeared stunned upon hearing her name announced on the ITV program, responding with “I did it” when questioned about her emotions.
The artist, who lives with a degenerative eye condition that has rendered her registered blind, received an appreciative embrace from her coach Sir Tom Jones during his final appearance on the show, following his earlier statement that he had been “fired”.
After the broadcast, the 31‑year‑old McHugh remarked, “I won The Voice! I’m completely shocked and have not yet fully processed this news.”
McHugh posted video on social media depicting her laughing and smiling alongside family and friends who cheered enthusiastically at a watch party in Cardiff.
Her awards comprise a £50,000 cash prize and a recording contract, and her debut single—a cover of The Beatles’ classic “Blackbird”—has been released.
She posted on social media, expressing heartfelt gratitude: “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for following my journey and joining my world! This is where it will truly get fun!”
