Six people were killed and several others injured when a major fire tore through a residential building in Brooklyn, New York City, early Thursday morning, according to fire officials.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) responded to the scene near Sunset Park shortly after 1:40 a.m. local time, deploying more than 230 fire and emergency medical personnel. Upon arrival, crews found the building’s first and second floors fully engulfed in flames.

Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A man and a woman were transported to a local hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries, the NYPD confirmed. Six civilians were injured, two critically, and three firefighters also sustained injuries, the FDNY reported.

Mayor Eric Adams said he was “heartbroken” by the loss of life and urged New Yorkers to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

A hazardous materials unit was dispatched to the location due to the presence of a lithium-ion battery, though authorities have not yet determined if it played a role in sparking the fire.
