Soccer Game Pileup Leads to Two Fatalities and Widespread Injuries in Wichita
A 34-year-old woman was arrested Saturday after her pickup truck collided with spectators at a youth soccer match in Wichita, Kansas—responsible for the deaths of six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. Authorities released the driver from custody without charges pending further investigation, according to officials.
According to the Wichita Police Department, investigators are awaiting toxicological analysis of the driver and a mechanical examination of the pickup truck involved in the incident where Adrian and Schafer were struck and killed. The injured party includes ten additional individuals, comprising five children—two girls aged five and nine, a five-year-old boy, and two boys aged eight—and various adults spanning ages 28, 32, 59, 65, and 68.
Police clarified that the two deceased were from McPherson, Kansas, located approximately one hour northwest of Wichita, and that the boys were not related to one another. The competitive youth soccer club representing the area described the event as an “unimaginable tragedy,” emphasizing the profound impact on its members.
Beyond the fatal victims, ten other persons sustained injuries, while an eleventh individual—a 61‑year‑old woman—experienced separate medical complications unrelated to the traumatic impacts.
The vehicle was observed stationary at the Stryker Sports Complex in northeast Wichita when the driver proceeded toward the soccer fields around 3:25 p.m. on Saturday. Emergency personnel responded to multiple calls concerning the collision, treating the victims while law enforcement detained the driver at the wheel.
The driver had two of her children traveling with her, and a third child was participating in soccer activities separately at the complex during the incident, police reported.
Over thirty witnesses were interviewed by investigators, with multiple accounts placing the two children inside the vehicle at the moment of contact.
Following the arrest, the woman was released without formal charges after consultation with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. Officials affirmed that no charges have been filed at this stage, though investigative efforts continue to uncover the underlying causes of the crash.
Police noted that the driver held a valid driver’s license, possessed no outstanding warrants, and resided in Garden City, Kansas, situated roughly three and a half hours west of Wichita. Limited personal information was disclosed beyond these details.
The Stryker Sports Complex confirmed that all events planned at the venue had been cancelled pending further instruction.
“The sports complex urges individuals and families impacted by the incident to offer their thoughts and prayers,” the announcement read. “Please refrain from visiting the site to allow emergency personnel space to conduct their duty,” it added. Future event updates will be shared as information becomes available.
Additionally, the Kansas State High School Activities Association suspended its flag football competitions, which had been scheduled for later Saturday at the same complex, expressing condolence to affected families and teams.
The association indicated plans to provide rescheduled game details on Monday.
Saturday represented the second occurrence within 26 years that the Stryker complex—located at the intersection of Wichita’s North Greenwich Road and East 29th Street—became the focal point of a high‑profile, fatal incident.
Historical reference to the Carrs, whose 2000 snow‑capped-field shooting spree resulted in the deaths of five people (including four fatally), underscored a legacy of violence at the venue. Although the governor initially denied their appeal for reduced sentencing, the context serves to highlight past tragic occurrences tied to the site.
