Omar Artan: A First for Somali Football Officiating at the World Cup, Blocked at Miami Airport
Omar Artan, the 2025 Confederation of African Football men’s referee of the year, was denied entry to the United States at Miami International Airport. The Somali official, selected to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals in North America, is currently stranded in Turkey with no clear explanation from U.S. immigration authorities for his repatriation.
Artan is among 52 international referees chosen by FIFA to oversee the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S., marking Somalia’s historic participation. However, his travel was blocked despite his prominent status, which includes officiating at the African Cup of Nations (Afcon).
In addition to his groundbreaking FCA recognition, Artan has led the Somali national football league since 2018. His inclusion in FIFA’s high-profile list underscores his extensive experience, though U.S. authorities have yet to clarify the reasons for denying him access to the World Cup site in North America.
