Sonny Gray Shines on Mound as Red Sox Dominate Yankees in Series Sweep Attempt]
BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox pitcher Sonny Gray delivered a dominant performance Sunday night, working seven innings of no-hit baseball against the New York Yankees.
Gray struck out eight batters while walking just one, helping Boston pursue a four-game series sweep. The right-hander retired his first 14 batters before issuing a walk to Amed Rosario with two outs in the fifth inning.
Defensive support played a crucial role in maintaining the shutout bid. In the third inning, Wilyer Abreu made a spectacular sliding catch in shallow right field, robbing Austin Wells of a hit after sprinting to reach a sinking ball in time.
Meanwhile, Yankees starter Carlos Rodón was equally effective through three innings, recording a one-hitter before Boston broke through in the fourth. Caleb Durbin’s two-run single ended Rodón’s bid for a perfect game and gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.
Boston entered play leading the series 2-0 and maintained their advantage in the decisive third game.
