The most noticeable contrast is in design. Sony introduced a fresh look for the WF‑1000XM6, moving away from the style of the WF‑1000XM5. The newer model features a more compact, pill‑shaped housing, though its ear tips again pose a fit challenge.

Fit remains critical for wireless earbuds, and the WF‑1000XM6’s included foam tips struggle to provide a secure seal for many users. This can diminish the effectiveness of its active noise cancellation (ANC). In contrast, the WF‑1000XM5’s silicone tips deliver a more reliable fit, preserving its ANC performance. If ANC is your priority, the M5 may be the safer choice.

Audio performance favors the WF‑1000XM6, powered by Sony’s newest QN3e chip, which the company claims delivers cleaner, richer sound. With DSEE Extreme upscaling applied, the M6’s audio feels more detailed and dynamic. However, for calls, the WF‑1000XM5 handles background noise better, using its beamforming microphones and bone‑conductance tech without overly processing the voice.

Both earbuds provide identical battery capabilities: eight hours of playback with ANC enabled and up to 24 hours when using the charging case, also with ANC on.

The WF‑1000XM6 adds several software enhancements over the WF‑1000XM5, including Auto Power Save mode, Battery Care tool, a 10‑band EQ, automatic ambient sound detection, background music mode, and support for Bluetooth 5.4 and LE Audio. The WF‑1000XM5 retains most core functions such as voice commands, head‑gesture control, Adaptive Sound Control, Speak‑to‑Chat, and quick access to streaming services. Both support multipoint Bluetooth, wireless charging, and IPX4 water resistance.
