The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has kicked off with the tournament’s top contenders—India, England and Australia—each securing victories in their opening matches.

On JioStar’s “The Experts” View, former England captain and ICC analyst Nasser Hussain, alongside ex‑England all‑rounder Alex Hartley, examined the performances of Shafali Verma, Beth Mooney and Nat Sciver‑Brunt while highlighting Sophie Ecclestone’s pivotal role for England.

Hussain noted that Ecclestone has evolved perfectly as batters now tailor their tactics against her. He added that captains—whether Heather Knight or Nat Sciver‑Brunt—trust her to claim critical wickets and often reserve her overs for the death overs, where her control can still dictate the outcome of a game.

“Ecclestone is a world‑class bowler,” Hussain explained. “She has had to adapt because batters now play her with greater caution. When a wicket is required, her captain hands her the ball. They often preserve her overs for the final overs of an innings, enabling her to deliver the decisive spell. Although she may not always take four wickets in every game, she consistently bowls four overs for as few as 15 runs in high‑scoring scenarios. That consistent, economical spell can win a match. The fact that batters hesitate to attack her without taking risks, and that she rarely concedes expensive runs, marks the true champion.”

Hartley praised Beth Mooney as the natural successor to Alyssa Healy as Australia’s wicket‑keeper batter, noting that her batting, partnership craft and game awareness make her an essential asset. He argued that handling the gloves does not hinder her T20 performance, thanks to her sharp focus and level‑headed approach.

Hartley also described Nat Sciver‑Brunt as a complete cricketer. He highlighted how she initially rotates the strike and seeks gaps before accelerating her pace after about twenty‑five or thirty deliveries, and emphasized her ability to take wickets in the middle overs while bowling tightly at the death.
