Sophie Thatcher has announced her departure from Paramount+’s survival drama Yellowjackets, reflecting on the emotional toll of portraying teenage survivalist Natalie Scatorccio for nearly seven years.

The 25-year-old actor, who also stars in Heretic and Companion, revealed she has just three days remaining on the show’s final season. “And then I’m free,” she told Variety. “Freeeeee!!”

Thatcher clarified that her decision stems from creative growth rather than dissatisfaction with the series’ direction. “I personally feel a bit stunted having to play the same character,” she shared. “And I’m relying on a lot of – I keep saying this, and it’s not necessarily true – cheat codes.”

The actress described the physical and emotional exhaustion of filming overnight scenes, including a recent 6 a.m. shoot involving intense screaming and crying. “The fact that I can get into that so fast without any… It feels less challenging.”

She emphasized that playing Natalie in both timelines—particularly revisiting her childhood persona seven years after the pilot—has become creatively disorienting. “Staying in that place you were at when you first filmed the pilot is a very confusing thing,” Thatcher said. “I want to continue to grow, but then I have to go back to where I was when I was a kid.”

Series creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson confirmed in October that Season 4 will deliver the show’s “twisted conclusion,” stating, “We’ve always known there would come a point when the story would tell us it wants to end.” A release date for the final season remains unannounced.

Thatcher’s career trajectory has shifted since her Yellowjackets breakthrough. In 2023, she told NME that she intentionally sought roles diverging from Natalie’s survivalist persona to prove her versatility as a “chameleon and character actor.” Her latest film, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Her Private Hell, marks her return to cinema after the psychological thriller’s neo-Tokyo storyline, alongside Charles Melton as a U.S. soldier searching for his abducted daughter.
