South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, less than three weeks after playing a pivotal role in his country’s historic advancement from World Cup group play. The 25-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns player featured in South Africa’s opening matches, including a 2-0 loss to Mexico and a 1-1 draw against Czechia, before coming on as a substitute in the 1-0 victory over South Korea that secured the team’s place in the round of 32.
“The South African Football Players Union is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Jayden Adams,” the SAFPU said in a statement Saturday. “His contributions to Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns embodied the spirit of South African football. He leaves behind a legacy that will inspire future generations.”
Neither the SAFPU nor the South African Football Association provided immediate details regarding the circumstances or cause of Adams’ death when contacted by Yahoo Sports for clarification.
Adams launched his professional career through the youth ranks of Stellenbosch FC, where he became the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract. He made 139 appearances for the team before transferring to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
“South African football has lost a rising star whose dedication and talent lit up the pitch,” said Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie in a statement Saturday. “Our thoughts are with his family, teammates, and the countless supporters who witnessed his journey from academy prodigy to international player.”
