South Africa’s deputy police commissioner announced his resignation three weeks after facing sexual offense charges.

A lawyer for Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya handed in his resignation during Monday’s disciplinary hearing, according to a police spokesperson.

The accusations allege that he sexually groomed a 16‑year‑old girl and raped an 18‑year‑old woman, and he also faces a trafficking charge.

Sibiya denies every charge; he acknowledges having sex with the 18‑year‑old but insists it was consensual.

He has remained in detention since his arrest three weeks ago, after his bail request was rejected.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe wrote on X that his exit from the force would be recorded as a dishonourable discharge, external.

The case emerges as the police service faces intense scrutiny from a major public inquiry probing claims of corruption and collusion with criminal elements.

The Madlanga Commission, which opened in September 2025, has heard allegations that Sibiya accepted a gift of 20 impalas from an alleged crime boss in return for a police contract.

He denied the accusation.
