Southeast Asia Faces Growing Energy Security Threats as Demand Surges[I/TITLE]
A new International Energy Agency report warns that risks to Southeast Asia’s energy supplies are escalating faster than the region’s ability to address surging electricity demand.
The region’s rapidly growing energy needs are colliding with rising costs, exacerbated in part by geopolitical tensions tied to the Iran conflict. Expanding data centre infrastructure and increasing cooling demands across fast-developing economies are further straining power systems.
The report recommends that Southeast Asian countries strengthen regional energy security through cross-border electricity sharing and diversified energy sources. However, analysts caution that territorial disputes and fragmented national energy markets remain significant obstacles that could leave the region exposed to future supply disruptions.
“Southeast Asia is one of the world’s most dynamic regions, but its rising energy requirements to sustain economic growth are confronted by mounting uncertainties in the global energy landscape,” said Fatih Birol, executive director of the IEA.
