Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed that Spain will go to the polls on 29 November after his Socialist minority government was unable to push through housing reforms in Congress.
Sánchez now faces an uphill re‑election battle as opinion polls show his Socialist Party trailing the conservative People’s Party, which many expect to seek a coalition with the far‑right Vox.
In his announcement, Sánchez warned Spaniards of an “extreme‑right wave” sweeping other nations and urged that Spain remain a global model of “peace, feminism and prosperity.”
BBC correspondent Guy Hedgecoe reports.
