Thousands continue to demonstrate across Spain following Congress’s rejection of a package of measures designed to ease the nation’s housing shortage.
Legislators voted down two decree-laws introduced by the government, which were intended to address the nationwide unrest sparked by the eviction of 87‑year‑old Maricarmen Abascal from her residence.
Abascal was forced out after failing to meet a rent hike imposed by the building’s owner, a case that ignited a broader push for affordable housing as rents have climbed sharply in recent years.
BBC correspondent Guy Hedgecoe reports from a Madrid protest, examining whether the government’s defeat could precipitate an early general election, currently slated for next summer.
