Spanish Civil Guard authorities are investigating after the body of a baby was discovered inside a chest freezer in a storage room at a residential building in Allariz, located in the Ourense province of north-west Spain.
According to reports from local newspaper La Región, the discovery was made last Monday by a woman sorting through the belongings of her recently deceased mother. The freezer was situated in the building’s garage storage area, where she found the body of a newborn.
Preliminary findings suggest the baby was born after a pregnancy of approximately 32 to 34 weeks and may have taken breaths. However, a definitive autopsy by the Galician Institute of Legal Medicine is required to determine the exact circumstances and cause of death.
Identity and Death Circumstances Under Scrutiny
Investigators have interviewed several individuals connected to the former property owner and have dispatched DNA samples to a laboratory in Madrid in efforts to identify the baby’s biological parents.
Reports indicate that police are also considering the possibility that the death occurred elsewhere in the province, with the body subsequently transported to Allariz inside the freezer.
The case remains open and is under judicial secrecy, overseen by the Ourense court. Officials are working to establish the timeline of the baby’s death and how the body ended up concealed in the chest freezer.
