During an appearance on Euronews’ Europe Today program this Friday, Spanish EPP MEP Antonio López‑Istúriz characterised Pedro Sánchez’s administration as weak, arguing it ought to have acted sooner on warnings from national police and intelligence services about thousands of irregular migrants poised to cross into Ceuta.

López‑Istúriz also suggested Morocco might be orchestrating the irregular crossing, even though Pedro Sánchez maintains there is no evidence to back that claim. He added that any material related to the incident would need to be verified via a judicial investigation.

The dispute unfolds amid already tense Madrid‑Rabat relations. López‑Istúriz described the incident as part of a recurring pattern in which Morocco probes Spain’s border‑security resolve, citing a comparable episode in 2021.
