Flames Crush Canucks 3-1 in Pre-Season Win; Offensives Struggle Forces Roster DecisionsAs season winds toward its close, the Vancouver Canucks fell short in a hard-fought 3-1 loss to the Calgary Flames, turning a promising pre-season debut into a pivotal moment for Vancouver’s aging roster. The game was defined by explosive offense from Ottawa and cautious defense from Toronto, ensuring the Canucks entered their year with ample opportunity to define their summer moves before their September opener in Edmonton.\n\nHead Coach Manny Malhotra praised the physicality of the display but acknowledged what remained elusive. “The first half was energetic with solid forechecking, though we pulled our feet in the second period. By the third, we recognized that finishing matters,” Malhotra noted after the Flames found depth and precision.\n\nThe Canucks’ most significant contribution came from Braeden Cootes, whose leadership on the ice helped create a path for Arshdeep Bains’ decisive third-period goal. Together, Cootes, Bays, and Matei Tomsic combined for seventeen hits amidst 29 total points, showing why they represent the backbone of Vancouver’s attempt to establish identity under GM Ryan Johnson and coaching staff.\n\nIn the secondary play, Victoria’s defensemen struggled for consistency despite individual effort. Tyler Rathy emerged as a dominant force among the forwards, directing 12 of 18 draws when Toronto showed combative interest in the net. His defensive productivity and ability to navigate tight spaces proved valuable against Flames winger Zach Whitecloud, who provided quality competition despite Toronto ultimately being shut out.\n\nThree-way battles for center included strong performances from Victor Mancini, Kirill Kudryavtsev, and Guillaume Brisebois, each showcasing different strengths in both offensive and defensive systems. Kudryavtsev demonstrated composure and intelligence at 22 years old, earning his starting spot alongside seasoned vet Aatu Raty, who amassed 114 career NHL appearances and contributed consistently throughout the contest.\n\nThe broader context centers on Canucks forward Braeden Cootes, whose final performance hinges on whether interim coach Kevin Lankinen receives extended playing time versus returning Alexei Gryunberg to maintain depth on the roster. With limited minutes expected beyond this exhibition stretch, Cootes must deliver elite production and clutch decision-making if Vancouver hopes to secure his future.\n\nOther notable stories include forward Sam Honzek adding assists in the second period, and Zach Whitecloud’s valiant fight against veteran Aatus Raty in the closing minutes. These developments underscore the Canucks’ delicate balancing act between developing young talent and retaining proven contributors as the season approaches its conclusion.\n\nAdditional roster developments feature details on player utilization patterns, defensive positioning trends, and how each participant navigated the challenging third-period adjustments typical of shortened pre-season calendars. Analysts suggest the Canucks’ approach may carry over to their regular season preparation at home in Alberta.\n\n— \n\nFeatured Image:Arshdeep Bains scores the Canucks’ lone goal against Calgary Flames goalie Dustin Wolf during the third period in a 3-1 pre-season loss at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Tuesday night. Ilya Safonov, Yaroslav Bryzgalov, Adam Novotny and Cole Clayton combined for 17 of the club’s 29 hits.\n\nKevin Lankinen held the fort in a shooting gallery before the Flames finally struck for three goals in a span of 3:58 late in the second period and outshot the Canucks 31-9.\n\n“I thought we had a really good start with a lot of energy and got in some offensive sequences,\nsaid Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra. “Obviously, they (Flames) had a veteran lineup and were relentless on pucks. There were spots where we executed, but overall, not good enough.\n\n\nCanucks Report\nEssential reading for hockey fans who eat, sleep, Canucks, repeat.\nBy signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.\nThanks for signing up!\nA welcome email is on its way. But it was too little too late.”\n\nFigure retracted due to size.\n>\nAATU RATY\nShould be a lock as the fourth-line centre based on faceoff dominance last season at 60.5 per cent efficiency — especially in the defensive zone — to finish fourth overall. After winning 12 of 18 draws Saturday in Seattle, he won 15 of 20 on Tuesday. That’s a big deal.\n\nRaty was also second in club hits last season with 165. Defensive decisions and foot speed remain challenges with just four goals in 66 games last season, but the Finn looked quicker Tuesday. He battled in the offensive zone to gain and hold position, and ripped a good wrister from the high slot at pace. Two others went wide. He also had good grit and chemistry with Bains off the rush.\n\nArticle content\n\nThen again, the Canucks may wonder what to do with speedy Max Sasson beyond an extra forward. A centre by trade, he shifted to left wing last season and responded with a career high 13 goals. Good wheels get him in on the forecheck in a hurry, but he was only 42.1 per cent in draws.\n\nGut feel says Raty, who has 114 career NHL games and has hit his two-game limit of pre-season games, held serve and keeps his spot.\n\n\nCanucks Report\n\n<img alt=”Calgary Flames Adam Klapka battles Vancouver Canucks Braeden Cootes in first period pre-season action at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026.” class=”embedded-image” src=”https://smartcdn.gprod.postmedia.digital/theprovince/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/flames_action018.ca_305360049.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=288&sig=6I4h_wyrR_HkkCVi6UBgpA” srcset=”https://smartcdn.gprod.postmedia.digital/theprovince/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/flames_action018.ca_305360049.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=288&sig=6I4h_wyrR_HkkCVi6UBgpA,”<https://smartcdn.gprod.postmedia.digital/theprovince/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/flames_action018.ca_305360049.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=576&sig=-8f9u69yd-vY43PJDtm1dQ 2x” height=”900″ loading=”lazy” width=”1200″/> Calgary Flames Adam Klapka battles Vancouver Canucks Braeden Cootes during the first period pre-season action at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026.
