Sri Lanka delivered one of the biggest surprises of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, beating defending champions New Zealand by five wickets in a gripping group‑stage match in Southampton on Tuesday.
Chasing 151, the Sri Lankan side recovered from a mid‑innings collapse to finish at 153/5 in 19.4 overs, recording their first victory over New Zealand in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
After winning the toss, New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr chose to bat. The White Ferns lost Isabella Gaze early but rebuilt through Kerr and Georgia Plimmer, who added 49 runs for the second wicket. Kerr then partnered with veteran Sophie Devine as New Zealand accelerated in the middle overs.
Kerr was on track for a half‑century before being dismissed for 45 off 36 balls, caught brilliantly by Kawya Kavindi. Devine continued her form, scoring 45 from 30 balls with four boundaries and a six. Maddy Green contributed a brisk 18, leaving New Zealand on 150/6. Sri Lanka’s Kavisha Dilhari was the standout bowler, returning figures of 2/35.
Sri Lanka’s chase started well, led by captain Chamari Athapaththu’s quick 27. However, New Zealand fought back through Bree Illing, and Athapaththu’s wicket triggered a collapse that saw Sri Lanka tumble from 45/1 to 55/4.
With the match slipping away, Nilakshika Silva steadied the innings. She and Dilhari forged a vital 50‑run partnership for the fifth wicket, keeping Sri Lanka within reach of the target.
After Dilhari’s dismissal, Silva remained composed, guiding the lower order alongside Kaushini Nuthyangana. Silva finished unbeaten on 54 from 37 balls, striking five fours and a six, while Nuthyangana added an unbeaten 24. Sri Lanka crossed the finish line with two balls to spare.
The loss leaves New Zealand facing a tough path forward after their second consecutive defeat, while Sri Lanka celebrates a landmark win that could prove decisive for their campaign.
