Australia squared the two-match series against Bangladesh at 1-1 with a comprehensive innings and 51-run victory in the second Test at Mackay on August 23, 2026, powered by a career-defining performance from Mitchell Starc. The left-armer claimed match figures of 10 for 51, including a devastating 6 for 12 in the tourists’ first innings and 4 for 39 in the second, to secure Player of the Match and Player of the Series honours.
The haul represented Starc’s fourth 10-wicket match in Test cricket. He struck early on day one, claiming a five-wicket haul in a span of just 22 deliveries to dismantle the Bangladesh batting order on a surface offering significant assistance to seam bowling. The win served as a sharp response to the side’s historic defeat in Darwin the previous week.
“Much better week. We knew we weren’t at our best, or what we expect of ourselves in Darwin. Bangladesh played really well, so nothing away from them there. But yeah, what we expect from ourselves this week is what we got, particularly with the ball on a wicket that aided us. So, one-all series, but a much better week for us,” Starc told The Indian Express.
Test cricket remains Starc’s priority
Test cricket continues to sit at the apex of Starc’s ambitions, and the veteran quick affirmed his desire to prolong his career in the format for as long as his physical condition permits. He cited the environment within the Australian squad as a primary motivator.
“It’s still hanging together. Yeah, I thoroughly enjoy being part of this group. Test cricket, I’ve said it before, will always be the pinnacle for me. And later on when we get to sing the song and he’s leading it, that’s one of the main reasons why we like to do it, love to do it. So, yeah, I’d like to milk my body for all I can for Test cricket,” he added.
How much longer will Starc continue playing?
Asked to put a timeline on his future, Starc acknowledged the distance remaining to reach the upper echelons of the all-time bowling records. He revealed a perspective-checking conversation with senior teammate Nathan Lyon regarding his current standing.
“I don’t know yet. I’m still playing. Nathan did remind me that I’ve just stepped on the first rung of the ladder and he’s still up there looking down on me. So, still got a way to go,” Starc concluded.
The Mackay contest finished as the second-shortest Test ever hosted on Australian soil, with Australia‘s solitary innings of 210 proving sufficient. Starc’s dominance reinforced his enduring value to the national attack and highlighted his sustained elite skill level deep into his international career.
