New Zealand is making it easier for Chinese tourists to visit by introducing a streamlined visa pathway through Australia. The government launched a 12-month trial in November that eliminates visa requirements for Chinese and Pacific Islanders traveling from Australia. According to Tourism Minister Louise Upston, this initiative has already resulted in a 40% increase in Chinese visitor arrivals over the past six months. With tourism playing a vital role in New Zealand’s economy, this move aligns with broader economic growth strategies aimed at boosting domestic demand despite challenges in fuel costs and investment. For now, nearly 90,000 electronic travel authorities have been issued to Chinese nationals, with 79,078 used for travel as of May 31. The effort marks a significant shift in facilitating international travel and enhancing tourism revenue opportunities.
