A student carried out a deadly attack on a junior high school in southern Philippines on Tuesday, resulting in the death of one peer and the perpetrator’s own suicide, authorities reported.
Mayor Khymer Olaso confirmed that the assailant used a high‑powered rifle and a .45‑caliber pistol, and broadcast the violence live on social media before turning the weapon on himself.
The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. local time at the junior high school affiliated with Ateneo de Zamboanga University, a separate campus from the university’s main site in Zamboanga City on Mindanao island.
Both the shooter and the victim were minors, according to police, and an investigation is currently underway.
Rev. Guillrey Anthony Andal, president of Ateneo de Zamboanga University, announced during a briefing that all students were safely evacuated and that classes across all levels, including an elementary school on the same grounds, were suspended on Tuesday.
The tragedy follows a similar shooting less than two months earlier in Tacloban, where two teenagers killed three individuals and injured seven others before being apprehended; investigators suspect the motive was retaliation for bullying.
