After months of anticipation, Sturgill Simpson’s latest Johnny Blue Skies album, Mutiny After Midnight, is finally available on streaming platforms.
The country innovator quietly added the LP to services on Monday, June 8—coincidentally his birthday. The digital release includes a bonus track: Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds’ cover of Procol Harum’s classic “Whiter Shade of Pale,” previously issued on a Record Store Day single alongside a rendition of “You Don’t Miss Your Water.”
The streaming debut arrives nearly three months after the album’s physical release on CD, vinyl, and cassette. When Simpson first announced the record in February, he hinted that it would remain a physical‑only offering, even previewing it briefly on YouTube before the video was removed—a playful “leak” he later admitted he’d always wanted to do.
In his original statement, Simpson explained the physical‑only strategy as a way to support independent record stores and preserve the tangible connection between music and fans. The approach proved successful, propelling Mutiny After Midnight to debut at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. He later encouraged listeners to purchase a physical copy, joking that it might even lead to unexpected social encounters.
Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds will hit the road later this year to promote the album, launching the tour on September 4 in Austin and concluding on October 30 in Lexington, Kentucky.
