[Amateur Goalkeeper Rejects Uganda’s Throne Succession Crisis Sparks Immediate Conflict]
An amateur goalkeeper from southeast London declined the position of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom after playing for a ninth‑tier English side, GE Dons of Crayford, thrusting a succession crisis into the spotlight ahead of the late monarch’s funeral on Saturday.

George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, captain and goalkeeper for SE Dons—a club competing in the ninth tier of English football in Crayford—had been selected by a 21‑member royal succession committee as the preferred candidate to succeed his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

Fifteen of the 18 members who participated in the vote backed him. He declined, invoking other responsibilities, while committee member Fr Charles Oyo explained the reject in an interview with ESPN.
In Tooro tradition, refusing the throne after formal selection is regarded as a serious disgrace. Kamurasi has not yet offered public commentary on his decision.
Media reports claimed he resisted leaving London because he maintained family ties in England and was slated to compete in an FA Vase qualifier that same weekend as Oyo’s funeral.
The committee subsequently named Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, an anchor and editor at Uganda’s state broadcaster UBC, as his successor earlier in the week; that choice was later overturned by the late king’s immediate family.

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ascended the throne at three and reigned over the Tooro Kingdom for thirty‑one years, died recently at age 34 while receiving cancer treatment in the United States.
Guinness World Records had honoured him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. Several thousand people gathered for the funeral on Saturday, where President Yoweri Museveni urged communal harmony.
Once the matter concerning the Batoro king is settled, I am prepared to cooperate fully, he stated, echoing the spirit of collaboration shown toward His Highness Oyo.
I call upon the family to employ peaceful, lawful means to resolve this dispute and to choose unity over division.
One of those deaths one never heals from
Uganda functions as a republic yet officially recognises four traditional kingdoms restored in 1993. These institutions operate predominantly as cultural symbols with limited political power.
Oyo served as the world’s youngest king, earning widespread admiration—even from global leaders such as Nelson Mandela. Until he turned eighteen, regents appointed by the kingdom managed his education.
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi nurtured close relationships with the Tooro royals, visiting frequently and supporting Oyo and his mother during her later years until his death in 2011.
“Such a loss bears the depth of a Bob Marley tragedy—it leaves scars that endure,” noted analyst Timothy Kalyegira in a statement shared at the occasion.
“He possessed a rare gift for bringing laughter to others; he consistently lifted my spirits,” Princess Ruth Komuntale recalled at the burial service.
