India’s pursuit of international success in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 ended in disappointment after a crucial group-stage loss to Australia. The team’s campaign concluded with a narrow defeat, raising critical questions about tactical decisions and player preparedness. Former captain Sunil Gavaskar has voiced strong opinions about the team’s performance, highlighting areas that need immediate attention.
Sunil Gavaskar Questions India’s Strategy After Women’s T20 World Cup Exit
Gavaskar’s analysis points to earlier matches as the real turning point of India’s campaign. He criticized the team’s fielding performance against South Africa in an earlier game, where defensive errors cost them a crucial win. Writing in Sportstar, Gavaskar emphasized that while losing to Australia is inevitable, the real issue was the team’s inability to capitalize on winning positions throughout the tournament.
The most significant concern raised by Gavaskar relates to player fitness. He questioned whether the team management prioritized players who were not fully fit, pointing out visible injuries such as bandaged fingers. According to him, fielding an unfit player is only acceptable if they bring exceptional match-winning abilities. Otherwise, it reflects poorly on the squad’s depth and the trust in reserve players.
“It’s difficult to assess from afar, but many fans are asking – were all players fully fit? Using an unfit player makes sense only if they’re an impact player. Otherwise, it implies the substitutes aren’t trusted. While I hope I’m wrong, seeing players with bandaged fingers gives the impression of injuries, even minor ones,” Gavaskar wrote.
Tactical Mistakes and Campaign Analysis
India’s tactical shortcomings were evident in the match against Australia. Despite a strong start from openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, followed by a crucial half-century from Harmanpreet Kaur, the team’s bowling strategy faltered under pressure. A partnership between Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner shifted momentum decisively in Australia’s favor.
Gavaskar highlighted a specific tactical flaw during this partnership – the failure to adjust field placements to counter Australian batters exploiting the extra-cover region. This oversight allowed the opposition to score consistently without taking excessive risks, contributing directly to India’s downfall.
