Four major Super League clubs have thrown their weight behind a proposed strategic partnership with the National Rugby League, directly countering criticism from Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont.

Months of negotiations have focused on aligning the premier rugby league competitions in Australia and the Super League, aiming for a collaborative future.

A key stipulation of the proposed deal involves the inclusion of the London Broncos as a 15th team from the 2027 season. This specific condition has emerged as a primary point of contention, prompting Beaumont’s public opposition.

Beaumont has stated that it is “just not right to put London in Super League”.

Beaumont’s primary objection stems from London’s 16th-place finish, which fell outside the automatic qualification spots for the Super League.

Furthermore, Beaumont argues that any promotion should follow the independent panel process used for Toulouse Olympique and York Knights, who were elevated for the 2026 season.

In contrast, other clubs view this partnership as a “landmark” and “defining” moment for the sport.

A decision is expected by the end of the week, when clubs will vote on the proposed partnership.

While Beaumont has announced his intention to vote against the deal, Leeds Rhinos, St Helens, and both Hull clubs have since released statements confirming their support. Notably, Hull KR and Hull FC issued a joint statement symbolizing unity between the city’s rivals.
