Supergirl Box Office Plummets 73% in Second Weekend, Ranking Fourth

Supergirl continues to struggle at the domestic box office following its underwhelming opening weekend.

The Warner Bros. film, directed by Craig Gillespie and produced by DC Studio co-CEO James Gunn, fell significantly short of its projected $55 million opening, earning only $37.1 million across 3,602 North American theaters. According to Variety, the movie’s total budget—including production and marketing—reached approximately $290 million. Its opening numbers mirror those of Joker: Folie a Deux, which earned $37.6 million in 2024, marking another high-profile DC failure.

Deadline now forecasts a 73% decline in Supergirl’s second weekend, projecting $10 million in revenue and a fourth-place finish. The drop aligns with Joker: Folie a Deux’s 81% second-weekend decrease, which earned $7 million. The film’s cumulative domestic earnings stand at $48.8 million, with $34.5 million internationally, totaling $83.3 million worldwide.

‘Minions & Monsters’ Opens Lower Than Expected as Toy Story 5 Holds Strong

Universal’s Minions & Monsters, the seventh Despicable Me installment, also underperformed in its opening. Deadline projects a five-day 4th of July weekend gross of $63.5 million from 4,243 venues, below initial estimates of $80 million. The film, with an $85 million pre-marketing budget, is expected to earn $38.5 million during its standard three-day run.

Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 5 is forecasted to drop to second place, adding $30 million to its $335.3 million total. Meanwhile, the historical biopic Young Washington is projected to open at No. 3 with $16-17 million from 2,700 theaters. Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day is anticipated to finish fifth, grossing $5.6 million to reach $104.8 million domestically.
